Action of Essential Oils on Sprouting of Non-Dormant Potato Tubers BABT
Finger,Fernando Luiz; Santos,Mirelle Mayana de Sousa; Araujo,Fernanda Ferreira; Lima,Paula Cristina Carvalho; Costa,Lucas Cavalcante da; França,Christiane de Fatima Martins; Queiroz,Matheus da Costa.
ABSTRACT The breakdown of dormancy and early sprouting is one of the main causes of losses of stored potatoes. Sprouting control becomes important especially when tubers are submitted to long-term storage for further processing by the potato industry. The objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of organic sprout inhibitors, eugenol and menthol essential oils, on the suppression of growth on non-dormant ‘Asterix’ tubers stored at 8 °C. Administration of eugenol and menthol essential oils reduced the number and the length of sprouts during cold storage up to fifty days. Nevertheless, the essential oils stimulated the break of bud apical dominance, stimulating auxiliary buds growth. The effect of the oils was restricted to inducing necrosis of...

Development of artificial sugarcane seed CP-54 from three cultivars (cv MEX 69-290; cv MEX 68-P-23; cv. CP 72-2086) using polymers in Tabasco, Mexico Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Álvarez-Sánchez,Geiner F; Arias-de la Cruz,Heidi L; Salgado-García,Sergio; Córdova-Sánchez,Samuel; Ortiz-Laurel,Hipólito; Castelán-Estrada,Mepivoseth; García-de la Cruz,Rubén; Castañeda-Ceja,Raúl.
Abstract Precision mechanized sowing of sugarcane has been delayed due to germination failures caused in sowing process by pieces of sugarcane, generating economic losses by reducing production. The aim of this study was to evaluate different polymers and cultivars of sugarcane to elaborate artificial seed CP-54, seed germination and quality of sugarcane plants. An experiment was carried out in two stages in experimental field of the Colegio de Postgraduados Campus Tabasco, Mexico. Results indicate that the best physical stage of artificial seed CP-54 was obtained in Mex 69-290, Mex 68-P-23 and CP 72-2086 cultivars encapsulated with starch polymers and sodium alginate. Artificial seed CP-54 germination was 100 and 84% encapsulated with starch and alginate...

Distribution and recycling of canopy nitrogen storage reserves in sweet cherry (Prunus avium) fruiting branches following 15N-urea foliar applications after harvest Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ayala,Marlene; Bañados,Pilar; Thielemann,Mariana; Toro,Román.
In sweet cherries, accumulated nitrogen (N) stores from the previous fall support early spring growth. To complement the N supply in the soil, Chilean growers use foliar urea applications after harvest. Information on the effectiveness of foliar N applications in sweet cherry is lacking. To study the canopy distribution of N applied as urea foliar sprays, an experiment using a "Bing"/"Gisela®6" ("GI®6") sweet cherry orchard was carried out in 2009/2010 in Chile (35° 09' 53'' S, 71° 20' 43'' W). The objective was to investigate N distribution and recycling in 3-year-old fruiting branches. A total of 120 branches (one per tree) were labeled using 15N-urea. 15N-urea was applied to the whole branch on four separate dates or treatments (TR) after fruit harvest:...

Ethylene and abscisic acid in the control of development of the rhizome of Kohleria eriantha (Benth.) Hanst. (Gesneriaceae) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Almeida,Julieta Andrea Silva de; Kascheres,Concetta; Pereira,Maria de Fátima D.A..
Kohleria eriantha has rhizomes which are underground stems with buds enclosed by modified leaves, that store starch. The buds of this rhizome can develop in two morphological patterns: an aerial shoot (similar to the mother plant) or a rhizome, depending on the water level present in the substrate. Development of the shoot was inhibited by low water availability (1 mL) in the substrate. It was verified that ethylene and ABA were involved in controlling the development of the rhizome pattern under low water availability. Treatments with ethrel, PEG and ABA induced shoot development whereas treatments with AgNO3 or AVG inhibited shoot development. Increased ethylene and ABA were observed under conditions that inhibited shoot development. Moreover, it is...

Morpho-anatomical features of underground systems in six Asteraceae species from the Brazilian Cerrado Anais da ABC (AABC)
Appezzato-da-Glória,Beatriz; Cury,Graziela.
In the Brazilian Cerrado (neotropical savanna), the development of bud-bearing underground systems as adaptive structures to fire and dry periods can comprise an important source of buds for this ecosystem, as already demonstrated in the Brazilian Campos grasslands and North American prairies. Asteraceae species from both woody and herbaceous strata have subterranean organs that accumulate carbohydrates, reinforcing the adaptive strategy of these plants to different environmental conditions. This study aims to analyse the morpho-anatomy of underground systems of six species of Asteraceae (Mikania cordifolia L.f. Willd., Mikania sessilifolia DC, Trixis nobilis (Vell.) Katinas, Pterocaulon alopecuroides (Lam.) DC., Vernonia elegans Gardner and Vernonia...
